Nature of Work Undertaken

Michael Dyson Associates Ltd was appointed by Cawder Construction, on the recommendation of Twin Valley Homes with whom we have a continuing working relationship. Initial feasibility studies had been carried out by Cawder Construction and our services were therefore required from RIBA Stages 2-6.

The scheme was designed to provide 28 dwellings for a mix of affordable rent and shared ownership for sale, consisting of:

  • 15 x 1 & 2 bed flats in one block (affordable rent)
  • 6 x 3-bed houses (for shared ownership for sale)
  • 5 x 2-bed houses (affordable rent)
  • 2 x 2- bed bungalows (affordable rent)

One of the bungalows was to be designed for a specific disabled resident; our design for this property therefore required close liaison with the occupational therapist to ensure the best internal design which also met all current wheelchair access standards.  All properties were designed to meet Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

The block of 15 flats was designed to work with the scale of the houses; the mass being split into different elements with the lower height element taking on the design aspects of the other dwellings, helping to ensure a balanced and integrated design across the whole estate.

The plots allocated for shared ownership were positioned to maximise the opportunity for sale; they were positioned such that the rear gardens overlooked the nearby canal, providing a more pleasing outlook.
