Lifetime Homes Assessments
The concept of Lifetime Homes was developed in the early 1990’s by a group of housing experts, including Habinteg Housing Association and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
Lifetime Homes are designed to incorporate 16 Design Criteria that can be universally applied to new developments, each design feature adding to the comfort and convenience of the home and anticipating and supporting the changing needs of both individuals and families throughout the different stages of life, including addressing issues of health and disability. The Design Criteria address:-
- Parking
- Approaching the dwelling
- Approaching entrances
- Entrances themselves
- Communal stairs & lifts
- Internal doorways & hallways
- Circulation space
- Entrance level living space
- Entrance level bedspace
- Entrance level WC & shower
- WC & bathroom walls
- Stairs & through-floor lifts
- Bedroom to bathroom hoists
- Bathrooms
- Glazing & windows
- Service controls
Michael Dyson Associates Ltd believes that the Lifetime Homes initiative is all about flexibility and adaptability and that thoughtful design can be used to create and maintain better living environments for everyone.
Wherever appropriate and feasible we adopt and apply the Lifetime Homes Design Criteria throughout the design process together with its incorporation within our Code for Sustainable Homes Assessor services.
